NEW YORK, September 4, 2018 — Reporters covering Tropical Storm Gordon are encouraged to contact the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) for coverage insights.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) today issued a hurricane warning extending from the mouth of the Pearl River, in Mississippi, east to the Alabama-Florida border and a storm surge warning from Shell Beach, Louisiana, east to Dauphin Island, Alabama.

A hurricane warning means Gordon may bring to the NHC’s identified areas sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour. A storm surge warning is made for the communities the NHC believes may be in danger of life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the coastline.

Dr. Philip Klotzbach, an I.I.I. non-resident scholar and a research scientist at Colorado State University, agreed storm surge and heavy rainfall are Gordon’s biggest threats.

Wind damage from tropical storms and hurricanes is covered under standard homeowners, renters and business insurance policies. Flood damage is excluded under standard homeowners, renters and business policies. Separate flood coverage can be purchased from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from a few private insurance companies.

Damage to private-passenger vehicles from tropical storms and hurricanes is covered under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy. Comprehensive provides coverage for property damage caused by wind, flooding and falling objects, such as tree limbs.
